MPEG LA looking for patents essential to VP8
On February 10, 2011, U.S. patent license management company MPEG LA announced that it is starting to collect patents necessary for video codec VP8 implementation in order to create a patent pool for VP8.
Regarding import suspension of FEI Company-produced FIB/SEM instrument
In the case of Hitachi High-Technologies (Hitachi High-Tech) having pleaded for import suspension of U.S. company FEI's FIB/SEM instruments on grounds that these instruments infringe on Hitachi's patent rights, the Japanese company announced that its claims have been officially acknowledged and that the devices in question are now subject to import suspension by customs authorities throughout Japan.
Panasonic and U.S. Freescale reach a settlement in semiconductor patent dispute

On February 15, 2011, it was revealed that U.S. semiconductor manufacturer Freescale Semiconductor and Panasonic had jointly submitted a notice to the United States International Trade Commission (USITC), stating that the two companies had reached a settlement in an IC chip patent dispute.
Preparations for Patent Law amendments including the introduction of a legitimate opposition system and usurpation application relief under way
On February 16, 2011, a meeting of the Intellectual Property Policy Committee at the Industrial Structure Council was held, resulting in a Committee panel's approval of a report “on legislative issues regarding the patent system.” The report proposes, among other provisions, the introduction of a legitimate opposition system, which would enable an opposition to third parties given the existence of a non-exclusive license. METI and JPO are to initiate preparations for amendments, etc., following the contents of this report.
