Objection to Chinese company's "Imabari" trademark
Regarding the problem of Imabari city's Shikoku Towel Industrial Association (STIA), which prides itself on being Japan's number one towel manufacturer, applying to register the name "Imabari Towel" as a trademark in China and being refused due to the fact that a Chinese company had already registered a name written with the same characters as "Imabari," the Association and the city of Imabari have filed a petition to China Trademark Office. The ruling is expected to take around three years to be made.

Laws on unfair competition prevention to be reviewed
On February 21, 2011, the Industrial Structure Council's Intellectual Property Policy Committee at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) compiled a report concerning the review of laws preventing unfair competition. In order to tighten regulations with regard to the features offered by Majikon, which enables the use of pirated software, the report proposes that such actions should become subject to criminal punishment.
