Improvement on Patent searches
On April 25, 2011 the Trademark and Patent Office issued Guideline DRPI-03-2011 informing that through PATENTSCOPE, it is now possible to conduct patent searches using key words in titles and summaries. Currently, before the Trademark and Patent´s Office database, searches can only be conducted if you hold the complete title of the invention or the name of the owner. It is not possible to conduct searches using key words that will disclose the content of a given patent application.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (OMPI) offers to the users of the patent system portal for patent services, PATENTSCOPE, wherein it is possible to search through approximately 1.8 million international patent applications that have been published.
Recently, OMPI also provides the search service of national collections. This new tool allows searches on both the PCT database mentioned above, as well as collections in South Africa, Argentina, ARIPO, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Spain, Guatemala, Israel, Morocco, Mexico, Panama, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Uruguay and Vietnam.
Under the agreements, signed between the Registry of Industrial Property and the OMPI, users of the Trademark and Patent Office benefit from this new tool, which includes national applications that were published and where it is possible as mentioned to search keywords of the titles and summaries.
