15.09.2006 - Germany And China Sign Intellectual Property Rights Accord

Officials from Germany and China on Thursday signed an intellectual property rights agreement which German Chancellor Angela Merkel predicted would improve conditions for companies investing in China`s booming markets.

Under the accord, German experts will help train Chinese patent officials and a series of exchanges are to be arranged for personnel from both countries.

"This will help ensure that there is more reliability for those who in invest in China," said Merkel at a press conference after talks with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.

Wen hailed the growth of German-Chinese economic ties and said he expected the overall trade volume between both nations to hit 80 billion dollars this year, after reaching 70 billion dollars last year.

Merkel underlined that growing German business interests in China were not blinding Berlin to human rights issues.

"I made clear these rights are indivisible and belong to everyone," said the Chancellor.
