15.09.2005 - USCBC Urges US Trade Representative to Expand Dialogue with China on IPRs Enforcement

WASHINGTON, DC - Since entering the World Trade Organization (WTO) four years ago, China has adopted policies resulting in a far more open and profitable business environment for many US companies, according to the US-China Business Council`s (USCBC) annual testimony for the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) on China`s WTO compliance.

Still, China has fallen short in areas such as intellectual property rights (IPRs) enforcement, transparency, and the granting of rights to distribute products in China made elsewhere, a press release by the USCBC on Tuesday stated.

"Despite the work that still remains to be done with China on implementation, the Bush administration should resist calls for precipitous action that would halt or even reverse the progress US companies have made to date in this dynamic market," commented USCBC President John Frisbie. He added, "The administration should reject the argument that China`s entry into the WTO has not benefited the United States. The trend of market opening in China is largely positive, even if significant issues remain." One of the key issues still to be addressed includes IPRs Enforcement; China has yet to ensure that IPR is adequately protected within China and to curb the export of counterfeit products to other countries, including the United States.

The US-China Business Council is the leading organization of US companies engaged in business with the People`s Republic of China. Founded in 1973, the USCBC provides extensive China-focused information, advisory, and advocacy services, along with comprehensive events, to nearly 250 US corporations operating within the United States and throughout Asia.
